Quick Answer

Do you need a permit for a dumpster in Amarillo?

The Amarillo dumpster permit rule is simple: you don’t need one if it sits on your driveway or anywhere else on private property — that covers the large majority of our roll-off dumpster deliveries. A permit only comes into play when a dumpster has to sit in the street or another public right-of-way, and that goes through the City of Amarillo’s Right-of-Way Division, not through us.

The Fine Print

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster Amarillo? What the Code Says

The city’s permit rules start with Chapter 8-3: Amarillo’s Code of Ordinances, Chapter 8-3 (Garbage, Trash and Weeds), makes it unlawful to let hauled material — dirt, broken concrete, lumber, trash, or similar debris — drip, fall, or scatter onto a street, alley, or public right-of-way. That’s the rule a street-placed dumpster has to stay clear of, on top of any permit requirement.

Permits for work in the public right-of-way are handled by the city’s Right-of-Way Division, part of Capital Projects and Development Engineering, with applications submitted through the city’s eBuilder system. As a general rule, work in the right-of-way isn’t allowed on weekends or between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays without separate approval from the City Engineer.

How We Handle It

Why Most of Our Customers Never Deal With This

We default to driveway placement on every delivery specifically because it keeps you out of the permit process entirely. If your property genuinely doesn’t have room — a tight lot, a construction site with no clear driveway, or a downtown business front — tell us when you call to order your dumpster and we’ll walk you through whether street placement and a right-of-way permit make sense for your job.

The permit application itself is the property owner’s or contractor’s responsibility with the city, not ours — but we’ll tell you plainly if we think you’ll need one before the truck ever leaves the yard, not after.

Who to Actually Call

Still not sure whether your address needs a permit? The City of Amarillo’s Right-of-Way Division, under Capital Projects and Development Engineering, is the office that issues right-of-way permits. Their office can confirm current requirements and fees for your specific address faster than any third-party guide — ours included, though our sizes and pricing page covers what we charge either way.

Whatever your delivery, these are the Amarillo dumpster permit rules that actually apply to your job.

Permit Questions

Does a driveway count as private property even if it’s close to the sidewalk?
Yes, as long as the container stays entirely on your driveway and doesn’t overhang the sidewalk or curb. We confirm exact placement with you before we set it down, so this isn’t something you have to measure yourself.
Who applies for the right-of-way permit — me or the dumpster company?
The property owner or general contractor typically applies, since the permit is tied to the address and the work being done, not to the hauling company. We can tell you when one is likely needed, but the application itself goes through the city.
What if my driveway is gravel or unpaved?
Still counts as private property, permit-free. We set protective boards under the wheels on any surface, gravel included, so an unpaved drive doesn’t change anything on the permit side.
Do rural properties outside Amarillo city limits need a permit?
City right-of-way rules apply inside Amarillo’s city limits. Outside them, in surrounding Potter and Randall County areas, requirements are set by the county instead — tell us your address and we’ll flag anything unusual before delivery.
How long does a right-of-way permit take to get?
That depends on current city processing times, which we don’t control and won’t guess at — call the Right-of-Way Division directly for a current timeline. It’s one more reason driveway placement is worth choosing whenever it’s an option.
